Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Summer-like pattern really ramped up with strong-severe storms on Friday. This pattern of hot, humid weather combined with frequent afternoon and evening thunderstorms will dominate SGA through the Memorial Day weekend.

Temperatures climb into the upper 80s and low 90s, with heat index reaching the mid-90s to near 100. While not record-breaking, the combination of heat and humidity could pose moderate heat-related concerns for those sensitive to high temperatures.

The bigger story, however, is the rain. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected each afternoon and evening through the weekend and into early next week. Be aware that storms will be efficient rainmakers due to exceptionally deep moisture in the atmosphere—moisture levels are at or above the 95th percentile for this time of year.

What to Expect: Day by Day

Tonight through Saturday: Showers and thunderstorms will be possible, with the highest chance of storms occurring Saturday afternoon between 4 and 5 p.m. Rainfall amounts will range from a 0.10″ to 0.25″, but stronger storms could produce locally heavy rain.

Sunday: Rain chances increase to 90 percent, with showers and thunderstorms likely after 2 p.m. This will be one of the wetter days in the pattern.

Monday (Memorial Day): The unsettled pattern continues with a 90 percent chance of rain. Showers are possible before 11 a.m., followed by thunderstorms between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and additional showers and storms after 2 p.m.

Tuesday: A 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with the best chance after 2 p.m.

Main Threats: Wind, Lightning, and Flooding

Strong potentially strong-severe with three primary hazards with these storms:

  1. Gusty winds — Stronger storms could produce damaging wind gusts
  2. Frequent lightning — A significant lightning threat with daily storm activity
  3. Locally heavy rainfall — The most significant concern. With atmospheric moisture so high, individual storms could dump heavy rain quickly, particularly in low-lying spots and areas with poor drainage.

Over the next seven days, most areas can expect 0.5 to 1.5 inches of rain, with some locations receiving up to 2.5 inches. Higher amounts are possible in localized areas where storms train over the same location.

The Silver Lining

While the frequent storms may disrupt outdoor plans, the rain is extremely beneficial for the region. The area continues to experience extreme to exceptional drought conditions, and this rainfall will help recharge local rivers and water systems that remain quite low.

Planning Your Weekend

  • Outdoor activities: Plan indoor alternatives or be prepared to move activities indoors quickly if storms develop.
  • Travel: Allow extra time for your commute, especially Saturday afternoon and Sunday when storm chances peak.
  • Pets and livestock: Ensure they have shelter available during afternoon and evening hours.
  • Hydration: With heat index values near 100 degrees, stay hydrated and take frequent breaks if working outdoors.
