PLAINS, Ga. (WALB) – South Georgia Technical College’s Crisp County Welding Department joined Georgia Southwestern State University and 8 Mile Customs of Albany to complete a handcrafted butterfly bench for the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail.

The metal bench, based on a design by former GSW art students, celebrates the late First Lady’s love for butterflies and her dedication to conservation. It now sits near the Carters’ first home on Paschall Street in Plains.

“This project shows that welding can be both functional and artistic,” said SGTC Instructor Tom Mayo. “We’re honored to contribute to Mrs. Carter’s legacy.”

The Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail, started in 2013, has grown to more than 3,000 pollinator-friendly gardens across the country.
