Description
SOUTHWEST GEORGIA (WALB) — Southwest Georgia residents are coming together to make the holidays brighter for children in need through Toys for Tots donations this week.
Students at Terrell Academy played a leading role after donating boxes of toys and bikes, staging the gifts at the school before turning them over for distribution.
Georgia’s Own Credit Union, a Toys for Tots supporter for 20 years, is amplifying the regional effort. The credit union already reported about $10,000 worth of toys donated statewide this season.
“One thing we’re passionate about is giving to these communities over the holidays,” said Brianne Heape with Georgia’s Own Credit Union in Albany. “This year we were excited to collect toys not just in the Albany area but in the Atlanta, Augusta and Kingsland areas.”
Community members emphasize importance of giving
Local resident Samantha Tuten said the effort ensures all children can experience the joy of Christmas morning.
“Having four kids myself seeing the smiles on their faces on Christmas morning is so exciting. No matter what their home life is, all kids should be able to have that same experience of opening presents that morning,” Tuten said. “Even if parents can’t afford it, we should come together as a community to provide that for these children.”
The Albany Georgia’s Own branch will accept drop-offs through Wednesday before the pickup.
“We’re hoping by donating these toys these kids will have a memorable and joyful Christmas,” Heape said.
WALB will continue to follow community efforts to support Toys for Tots this season.
