ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The Valdosta Fire Department is set to host their 4th annual 9/11 5k Memorial Run this upcoming weekend.

The event is meant to pay homage to those who lost their lives or the lives of loved ones and to acknowledge all the brave first responders who passed in the line of duty. The race will have a patriotic theme, and the fire department encourages community members to show their support by lining the racecourse with decorated signs and costumes.

The run will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7th.

You can register for the race here or the day of the race. Fees for the race vary. They are the following:

  • Early entry fee (until Aug. 25) -$25
  • Late entry fee (until Sept. 6) -$30
  • Race day fee (Sept. 7) -$35
  • First responder/military fee -$10

Pre-race packet pick-up will be held on Friday, Sept. 6 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Station 1 on 106 South Oak St, Valdosta Ga, and race day pick-up will begin at 6:30 a.m.

At 7:45 a.m. Valdosta Mayor Scott Matheson will give a speech and the race will follow. The race will start at 120 N Patterson Street. The course is a fast out and back that will take runners through Downtown Valdosta and past the Valdosta State University.

The Valdosta Fire Department took to Facebook to share their thanks for the sponsors of this event.

Awards and 9-11 Ceremonies will commence at 9 a.m., and the following awards will be presented:

  • top overall male and female
  • masters male and female
  • top two in the 11 and under age group
  • top two in the 12 - 14 age group
  • top two in the 15- 19 age group
  • top two in the 20-29 age group
  • top two in the 30-39 age group
  • top two in the 40-49 age group
  • top two in the 50-59 age group
  • top two in the 60-69 age group
  • top two in the 70 and over age group
  • oldest finisher
  • youngest finisher
  • most patriotic

All of the proceeds from the race will be donated to the Valor Service Dogs Incorporation.
