COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Investigators charged an Ohio man with child endangerment after his 3-year-old child got his handgun from an unlocked drawer and shot himself, court documents say.
Officers went to Nationwide Children's Hospital just before 11 p.m. Friday on a report of a child having been stabbed though the wound was later determined to be from a gunshot.
The father of the child, whom police have identified as 21-year-old Abdalla Abdalla, had driven the child to the hospital. Charging documents for him state that he initially told police that he didn't know where or when the shooting happened.
Police went to his home and interviewed his family who reportedly confirmed the shooting happened at the house.
The court documents state Abdalla then told officers he had left his handgun in an unlocked drawer. He said he was in the bathroom when he heard yelling and screaming and believes his son went into the basement bedroom where the gun was.
He took the child to his cousin's house to clean the wound before taking the child to Nationwide Children's Hospital.
Police took Abdalla into custody, charging him with a felony count of endangering a child. He is set to appear in court on Monday morning.
