Description

(WCHS) — Damage has been reported all afternoon and into the evening following a line of severe thunderstorms moving through parts of West Virginia.

Several accounts of downed trees and power lines were reported across the area, which led to thousands of customers without power.

In other areas, homes and cars were damaged by trees, signs and billboards that were blown over by strong wind gusts.

A historic building dating back to the late 1800s was among the structures damaged during severe storms in Nicholas County.

The Irish Corner One Room School, which was relocated to Nicholas County Veterans Memorial Park as a museum and housed local history, books and records, was damaged during storms Tuesday, according to county commissioner Garrett Cole, who added, he was unsure if the building can be saved.

Cabell County officials said a tractor-trailer was blown over in Huntington.

Then, about 30 minutes later, people in Kanawha County began reporting damage, including downed trees and power lines. A state of emergency was issued there, activating the emergency operations center and opening a storm shelter.

Gov. Jim Justice declared a state of emergency, saying the proactive measure will ensure the allocation of necessary resources and expedition of emergency response efforts.

In southern Ohio, an elementary school suffered such severe damage, it is not expected to open for the foreseeable future. Plans are being made to move students at Fairland West Elementary School to temporary buildings next week, the school district’s superintendent, Roni Hayes, said in a statement Tuesday afternoon. No injuries were reported. This week is spring break.

Earlier, a tornado was confirmed to have touched down in Boyd County, Ky. The National Weather Service described it as an EF1. Gov. Andy Beshear closed all state office buildings at 1 p.m. and activated the state’s emergency operations center. He also activated the state’s price gouging laws.
