Description

WASHINGTON (TND) — It was a time in his life marked by drug addiction, luxury cars and millions of dollars in business deals with overseas companies. The aftermath of which Special Counsel David Weiss saidwas in violation of the law.

President Joe Biden’s son Hunter’s case involves nine counts total but three felony counts including tax evasion and filing a false return, to all of which he’s pleaded not guilty.

Hunter Biden himself has blamed his poor decision-making on the trauma of losing his mother and sister at a young age and later his brother Beau, to cancer.

In a Dec. 13 speech on Capitol Hill, Hunter Biden told reporters, "In the depths of my addiction, I was extremely irresponsible with my finances.”

Charges are laid out in his indictment, in which Special Counsel Weiss asserts, "he spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle rather than paying his tax bills."

The upcoming trial includes plans for at least one former business partner to testify.

His financial missteps have for years also been at the center of a probe by House Republicans who had been looking to tie his father to the deals, since he was vice president at the time with questions about why Hunter was paid millions from companies based in China and Ukraine.

In an interview with The National Desk last month, Peter Schweizer, president of the Government Accountability Institute, who has researched the Biden family finances extensively, said, "Clearly I think the foreign entities were hoping to gain favor with Joe Biden that’s why they were sending money to Hunter Biden and the family.”

Still, Hunter Biden has not been charged with violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act or FARA, though some attorneys have suggested he should be.

He wasfound guiltyon three gun-related charges in a separate federal case. His sentencing in that one is expected shortly after Election Day.
