Bailey was the subject of a chase that began on the 4500 block of Quarles Street, Northeast around 5:40 p.m. when officers saw a man get out of a suspicious vehicle.
Officials said the man ran from the area and jumped into the roadway on Interstate 295 southbound. At some point, police said Bailey placed a firearm into a storm drain before crossing over into the Northbound 295 lanes and fleeing on the back of a motorcycle.
David, a long-time officer with MPD's Violent Crime Suppression Division, tried to recover the weapon and was accidentally shot in the process. He was taken to a hospital by helicopter, where he tragically died from his injuries.
