NEW YORK (TND) — Police in New York shot and killed a suspect who fired a gun at officers during an investigation in Queens Monday morning, according to authorities.

Chief Jeffrey B. Maddrey, who is the chief of department for the New York City Police Department, said two officers responded to a shots fired call at Ocean Bay Apartments shortly after 10:30 a.m. ET.

Maddrey said police made their way to an apartment on the fourth floor, where they then spoke with an unidentified male through a bedroom door for a few minutes.

Maddrey said the door eventually opened and the suspect pointed a gun at the officers.

Our officers gave commands to drop the weapon and then our officer discharged his firearm," Maddrey said.

He said the officers then went inside the room and secured the suspect before performing chest compressions and calling for backup. The suspect, said Maddrey, was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead around noon.

He said the officers were also taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation.

Maddrey said the suspect's gun was recovered at the scene.

"It appears to be an imitation gun, but of course, crime scene has to do a further analysis of the weapon to give us a definitive answer," Maddrey said.

He added that police believe there was a domestic dispute at the apartment, which led to the initial call.

"We don't have all the details of exactly what happened -- this is all part of the investigation," Maddrey said, adding that a nearby school was temporarily placed on lockdown amid the investigation.
