BROWNSVILLE, Pa. (TND) — A couple in Pennsylvania allegedly locked a 6-year-old girl in a dog crate, kept her zip-tied and beat her with a broom.

Jacob William Weight Sr., 37, and Mimi Ann Frost, 33, were arrested after an "extensive investigation" and charged with aggravated assault, corruption of minors, strangulation, simple assault and endangering the welfare of children among other charges, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Police said in a statement they responded to a home in Brownsville for an unresponsive 6-year-old.

The home was found to be in "deplorable conditions" with dog feces, trash and urine throughout the house, officers added.

The conditions the child was kept in were discovered after officers interviewed all of the children in the home, according to a release.

Fayette County District Attorney Mike Aubele told KDKA it is one of the worst cases against a child he has ever seen.

"Throughout our investigation, we realized that this little girl had suffered, for lack of a better way to put it, she had been tortured in that house. There were numerous abrasions on her body, open sores, she was believed to be septic," Aubele said.

A criminal complaint obtained by KDKA states the child told a therapist that she slept in the dog cage every night and ate dog food. Additionally, the girl had not been to a doctor in three years and was being withheld from school.

Police also noted eight dogs and two cats were living in the heatless home along with five other children, according to WPXI.

Frost and Weight are due in court on Feb. 20.
