(Gray News) - Pete Rose, a former MLB player and manager known by his nickname “Charlie Hustle,” has died, according to reports.

Rose was 83 years old.

A source close to Rose’s family confirmed the death to Sports Illustrated’s Tom Verducci on Monday.

According to the Associated Press, Stephanie Wheatley, a spokesperson for Clark County in Nevada, confirmed on behalf of the medical examiner that Rose died Monday. Wheatley also shared that Rose’s cause and manner of death had not yet been determined.

Rose, whose full name is Peter Edward Rose Sr., played in Major League Baseball from 1963 to 1986.

He was most notable for being a part of a dominating Cincinnati Reds lineup in the 1970s.

Rose also played for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1979 to 1983, where he won his third World Series, and played a short time with the Montreal Expos.

He became a 17-time All-Star and played on three World Series winners. He was the National League MVP in 1973 and World Series MVP two years later.

Rose holds the major league record for games played (3,562) and plate appearances (15,890) and the NL record for the longest hitting streak (44).

He also served as the manager of the Cincinnati Reds from 1984 to 1989.

In 1989, Rose was suspended from baseball for life for gambling. The ban left him ineligible for induction into Hall of Fame, however, he was voted into the Cincinnati Reds team’s Hall of Fame in 2016.
