TIFTON, Ga. (WALB) - A cigar lounge may be coming to downtown Tifton. But that’s if approved by the city council.

In a regular scheduled council meeting, many went before the Tifton city council to say why they were for, or against a cigar lounge coming to the area.

Councilman Lester Cromer, who’s trying to bring the establishment to his district, explained why he wanted to open this type of establishment.

“Cigar enthusiasts tend to want to go to places to smoke cigars versus always outside because the weather doesn’t always permit. In Tifton, I tend to have to go to the hotels that have fire pits which means it’s outside. That’s where I started meeting a lot of cigar enthusiasts coming through from out of state,” Cromer said.

The business is set to go on Main Street in downtown Tifton. To the left of the establishment is a clothing business, and to the right is a Cuban restaurant.

WALB hasn’t yet spoken with those business owners to see how they feel about the business coming next door, but one business owner who is a block or so down doesn’t want this business on Main Street. WALB asked him if he didn’t want the business in the city at all or just the downtown area.

“Ideally, yeah I wouldn’t want it period,” Lee Turner, owner of Bula’s Antiques, said. “But if it was somewhere else in a stand-alone building by itself, where it’s not affecting anyone else— I would like it better. I’m a cancer survivor myself but there is so many residents in Tifton that could be walking downtown that could be subject to secondhand smoke.”

Turner says he is concerned about the ventilation system. Cromer says the average lounge has two or three vents, but his lounge will have several more.

“I think it’s going to probably be the first in this area, the level of ventilation system that I’m going to have,” Lester said. “I plan to have two major ones in the ceiling, six on the walls and four on the floor.”

While some spoke out about how they didn’t want the business at that location, many spoke about how they did want this request approved.

“There’s been a lot of people looking forward to this opening up. I travel to Atlanta to sometime smoke cigars,” one resident, said. “Why do we have to travel for those pleasures? We’re always looking for something to do in Tifton. We’re always saying there’s nothing to do. We shouldn’t have to travel to Atlanta to have the pleasures that you want.”

A final decision on whether the cigar lounge will be located on Main Street in Downtown Tifton will be made at the next council meeting on April 15th.
