Second worker trapped in Ky. building collapse found dead (WCHS)
INEZ, Ky. (WCHS) — The second worker trapped in a Kentucky building collapse earlier this week was found dead on Friday, according to Martin County Judge-Executive Lon Lafferty.
Officials previously confirmed that the other worker had already died, but rescue efforts for the second continued around the clock for the second day.
Lafferty said crews were working to get the workers’ bodies out of the rubble and are hoping to have both removed sometime Friday.
I am sad to report that the second worker trapped inside the collapsed coal preparation plant in Martin County has died,” Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear posted on X. “This is a heartbreaking situation and I hope everyone will join Britainy and me in praying for the families of these two workers and this entire community.
The more than 10-story building at the Martin Mine Prep Plant in Martin County first collapsed about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Martin County Sheriff John Kirk said the plant hasn’t been in use for several years and the men were salvaging material from the building when it collapsed.
Jeremy C. Slinker, director of the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management, cited the remote area as a hurdle that first responders were working to overcome when it comes to communication. Crews on scene struggled with cell service since the incident occurred.
Beshear declared a state of emergency on Wednesday to mobilize resources to the area.
