Description
ALBANY, GA. (WALB) - Hurricane Helene hit South Georgia causing severe damage and many power outages throughout the area.
Georgia Power says they have restored power to over 1 million customers across the state, which is around 80% of all customers impacted by the storm. Around 278,000 customers are still without power, according to an Oct. 1 release.
Damage reports following Helene have also been released by Georgia Power:
- 8,000+ power poles left to be repaired or replaced
- 21,000+ spans of wire which equals approximately 1,000 miles
- 1,500+ transformers
- 3,200+ trees on power lines that have to be removed or addressed to restore power
Atkinson County
1,861 customers without power.
Berrien County
2,955 customers without power.
Brooks County
572 customers without power.
Clinch County
1,663 customers without power.
Coffee County
2,449 customers without power.
Cook County
1,016 customers without power.
Echols County
670 customers without power.
Lanier County
1,699 customers without power.
Lowndes County
17,843 customers without power.
“We’ve just spoken with Georgia Power leadership and they have let us know that 95% power restoration is expected by 11pm next Saturday (10/5). We’re so grateful to the linemen & crews working tirelessly. We’re all in this together,” said the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce.
Hurricane Helene has left several cellular providers down.
AT&T
7% of AT&T towers are out.
Verizon
Currently, 32 Verizon towers are out.
T-Mobile
Is currently having outages in select areas.
Georgia EMC has reported hundreds of thousands of outages across the state. Click here to view outages locally.
