(WSET) — A new Virginia Senate Bill 280 was passed this week that will allow terminally ill people to end their own lives.

The so-called “Death with Dignity” bill would allow an adult diagnosed with a terminal condition to request a healthcare provider prescribe a self-administered controlled substance for the purpose of ending the patient's life.

Democratic Senator Ghazala Hashmi, who introduced the bill, said this would allow people to end their suffering on their own terms.

"This legislation is about alleviating or ending the suffering for terminally ill people. This legislation would allow an eligible individual the autonomy to determine to decide to end their suffering is too great," Sen. Hashmi said.

On the other side of the aisle, Republican Senator Mark Obenshain said this would cause suicide numbers to rise in the commonwealth.

"The hope is that we would be able to prevent suicides, that we would be able to stop people who were inclined to commit suicide... If we really want to prevent suicides not passing this bill is something that will save lives," Sen. Obenshain said.

This bill passed 21 to 19.
