Description

COLQUITT COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - On Monday, we’re hearing from the family of a Colquitt County man who police say was shot and killed by his wife’s roommate in 2022.

Katelyn Ireland is now facing even more charges in the death of Jason McCollum.

The family of McCollum waited over a year to receive this update. Back in 2022, WALB reported that Ireland was initially charged with four charges and then claimed self-defense.

“I was so devastated. I could not ever believe that anything so tragically could have happened to this family. I’ve never known to my family; I’ve seen it to other families, but I never thought I would lose a child to murder,” said Aileen McCollum, Jason’s mother.

The charges against Ireland have increased from four charges to eight.

  • 1 count of malice murder
  • 1 count of felony murder
  • 3 counts of possession of a firearm
  • 3 counts of aggravated assault

WALB asked the daughter what keeps her motivated in this waiting period for justice, and she said “My daughter. She is a real blessing. I think my dad sent her and gave her a good kiss,” said Mykenzie Ramsey, Jason’s daughter.

The next steps in this case have not yet been decided, but the family tells WALB they’re prepared to face the prospect of a trial.

“We are very happy that the charges have been on her, and we are excited that they worked hard to find justice for my dad,” said Ramsey.

“But thank God. Every day I pray to him. Take my hand, hold me, and lead me in the right direction. And God has held me up and through every moment, every minute,” said Aileen McCollum.

In December, WALB spoke with Dustin Land, Ireland’s attorney, and he told us then the shooting was a “classic case of self-defense”.

“It’s been great, they’ve walked up to me loved me, condolence with me and told me they are praying for me and waiting for justice to be served also,” said Aileen McCollum, mother.

“Justice is coming. The charges is a good thing. We do hope that we don’t have to go through the trial because we’ve already endured so much pain. But if we have to, we will,” Ramsey said.

Land says that he plans to file a motion for immunity within the next 60 to 90 days.

WALB also reached out to the district attorney for the next steps in this case, but a statement has not yet been provided.

The family plans on keeping Chad’s legacy alive by wearing a t-shirt with his favorite phrase.

“It’s a picture of my dad and on the back, it says ‘I Love You More’ with his signature. Because every time we would say I love you, he would say I love you more,” said Ramsey.
