ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Hundreds of cars lined up along Radium Springs Road, stretching as far as two miles on Wednesday, Nov. 19, with many residents hopeful they will receive a box of food. This event attracted many local families, and it all started with a Facebook post.
“I’ve been here since 8:45 this morning,” Loraine Palmer, a giveaway recipient, said. “My next-door neighbor gave me a flyer. That’s how I found out.”
Tamiko Whitlock, an Albany native, had an idea to feed families ahead of the holiday season. Her post received an overwhelming response from the community, and New Birth Fellowship Church volunteered to use their campus. From there, other local churches, civic organizations and law enforcement partnered up with the cause and donated resources to make this event happen.
“When that thought came to mind, I knew how Reverend Gardner worked for the community. He had the connections,” Whitlock said. “So I called him and asked if I could use his venue. He said ‘let’s do it.’”
Volunteers filled cars with frozen turkeys, fresh produce and canned goods. Despite the long line, the families were grateful for free groceries. While families waited, Whitlock and other organizers talked with them.
“Grateful. They were thankful that somebody was able to help them in their time of need,” Whitlock said. “And that’s what the church is for, and it stepped up.”
Whitlock said this won’t be the last giveaway. She and the other organizers are already planning future events to ensure the community has the resources they need. People can reach out to New Birth Fellowship Church for additional assistance.
