ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - As students head back to the classroom for the new school year, the Albany Police Department is reminding drivers to slow down as school zone speed cameras are once again active.

The department announced that school zone speed cameras resumed operating Monday, Aug. 3, to help improve safety for students, parents, school staff and pedestrians during arrival and dismissal times.

As a courtesy, drivers who are caught speeding in a monitored school zone will receive a warning, rather than a citation, during the first 10 days of enforcement. The warning period began Aug. 3 and runs through Aug. 12.

Beginning Thursday, Aug. 13, drivers who violate the posted speed limit in active school zones will receive citations.

Police are urging motorists to remain alert, obey posted speed limits and use extra caution when traveling through school zones throughout the school year.

“Let’s work together to keep our students, parents and school staff safe,” the Albany Police Department said in a statement.
