ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Twelve people were injured after a Greyhound bus headed for Atlanta crashed into a dump truck on Friday morning.

The bus, which left from Charlotte, crashed near Greenville, South Carolina, according to Greenville police. Its driver was among those hospitalized.

Greyhound said it sent a relief bus to transport all of the riders who were not sent to the hospital to Atlanta.

At the Greyhound station in Atlanta, Carl McKenzie said he was on board when the incident happened.

“I braced myself for impact and, unfortunately, I think I fractured both of my wrists in the process. But no one was seriously injured — the bus driver, we’re praying for her,” he told Atlanta News First.

Nate Nunez said he was also on board.

“All you hear is a ‘bam’ and everyone screaming, me included,” said Nunez, who is heading to Missouri.

A Greyhound spokesperson confirmed 33 people were on the bus.

“Our team is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and providing support to our passengers, the driver, and law enforcement. As the investigation is ongoing, we have no further comments at this time,” the statement said.

Nunez and McKenzie believe the driver was at fault for the crash.

“I think she fell asleep while she was driving. I know that’s a terrible mistake, but always forgive, and we all make mistakes,” McKenzie said. “I really hope she’s okay.”

Atlanta News First has not been able to confirm that claim, but ANF asked Greyhound if they’re investigating the possibility that the driver fell asleep. A spokesperson did not respond to that question.
