Description
NASHVILLE, Ga. (WALB) — Berrien will host Brooks County in a Week 9 region matchup Friday, October 16. The Berrien Rebels are 5-1 overall and 1-1 in region play. The Brooks County Trojans are 2-5 overall and 2-1 in region play.
Fresh off a bye week
Berrien opened the season 4-0 before losing to Thomasville and then bouncing back to beat Cook. The Rebels had a bye week before facing Brooks County.
“It’s been a very good two weeks of practice, very intense two weeks of practice and I’m proud of how our guys responded,” Dean said.
Dean said Brooks County’s record does not reflect its quality.
“Their record is not indicative of how good they really are,” Dean said.
Brooks County schedule
Brooks County lost five straight games to open the season, then won two of three region games. The Trojans beat Bacon County and Cook and lost to Thomasville.
Brooks County head coach Josh McFather said the non-region schedule prepares the team for region play.
“It pays dividends for us,” McFather said. “It shows up that we’ve played some really good football teams and that we’ve done the things we need to do to go out there and play and compete.”
Quarterbacks and receivers
Berrien quarterback Cash Perkins has 12 touchdowns and averages 118 rushing yards per game.
“He’s definitely a dual threat guy, a very underrated dual threat guy because everyone hones in on his running game but he can definitely beat you through the air,” Dean said.
McFather said the Trojans plan to limit Perkins.
“A kid like that you don’t contain him,” McFather said. “You don’t stop him, all you can do is hope to limit him.”
Brooks County receiver George Lamons Jr. has 14 touchdowns, which accounts for more than half of the Trojans’ points this season.
“He’s a heck of a ball player, probably one of the best in the region if not the best in the region,” Dean said. “It’s going to take everything we can to try and stop him on Friday night.”
“I like George versus any double or triple team at this point in the season,” McFather said. “Nobody has out worked him.”
Home field advantage
Berrien will have youth night, a pink out, and T-Mobile’s 5G Friday Night for the home game. A win would move Berrien to 2-1 in region play after winning one region game last season.
“To win and go two and one in the region after last year we only won one region game,” Dean said. “It would be huge for us.”
Kickoff is set for 7:30 P.M. at Raymond Jones Memorial Stadium in Nashville, GA.
