GRADY COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - A Cairo man was arrested following a foot pursuit on Saturday, June 28.

According to the Grady County Sheriff’s Office, deputies tried to conduct a traffic stop near Copeland Avenue SW and 11th Street SW on 33-year-old Miguel Smiley, of Cairo.

GCSO said deputies saw a tag obstruction on the vehicle Smiley was driving.

When deputies tried to stop him, the sheriff’s office said Smiley fled the scene, driving circles around the yard of a nearby residence.

After about four laps, Smiley left the vehicle and fled on foot carrying a black bag, according to GCSO.

During the foot pursuit, deputies deployed a razor, which successfully incapacitated Smiley.

GCSO said law enforcement recovered the black bag that Smiley was carrying. The bag had marijuana, prescription pills, packing bags—commonly used for distribution— and scales.

Smiles was taken into custody for the following charges:

• Possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance
• Misdemeanor fleeing and eluding
• Driving under the influence (DUI)
• Obstruction of law enforcement
• Open container violation
• Display of license plates violation
• Driving while license suspended

“As I and my deputies have said before, ‘Not in Grady,’” said Sheriff Earl Prince, reaffirming the department’s commitment to keeping the community safe.

According to GCSO, the investigation is active and ongoing.
