PLAINS, Ga. (WALB) – Today marks a historic moment in Plains, Georgia, as the Carters’ gravesite officially opens to the public for remembrance and reflection.

Nestled within a serene memorial garden designed by former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, the final resting place of President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter is now accessible to visitors.

Hundreds have gathered to honor the legacy of one of America’s most beloved first couples.

For many, today serves as a moment of personal reflection and gratitude for the Carters’ lifelong dedication to public service and humanitarian work.

“This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness a piece of history. This is the first time the general public has been welcomed to visit the gravesite, and the turnout has been incredible. Hundreds were here, quietly paying their respects”

For many, today serves as a moment of personal reflection and gratitude for the Carters’ lifelong dedication to public service and humanitarian work.

Visitors are welcome, seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Exact details on guidelines will be provided by local officials and the National Park Service.

Today, the Carters’ gravesite officially opens to the public for remembrance and reflection.

Ben Sosby of Americus says he knew the Carters and admired their accomplishments and humility. Sosby told me he came bright and early to remember a couple who inspired him so much.

“I met the Carters in 2010 at the Peanut festival in Plains and in 2014, I started helping her with her book signing and we became close. Today is just an honor just to show that I’m here,” Sosby said.

One couple from Americus says they admired Carter’s dedication to the world through service but the qualities they shared in marriage inspired them as well.

“Understanding, gratefulness, kindness, and just appreciation for each other,” Herman Lamar said.

This park is one that pictures don’t do justice and these visitors agree

“It’s just so beautiful. It’s so serene and peaceful it’s absolutely beautiful,” Veronica Lamar said.
