State representative James Burchett addressed the citizens of Atkinson County and Pearson to assure them that he was working with state and local officials to address the issue.
“I am working closely with Governor Kemp’s office, Senator Goodman, EPD, EPA, the District Attorney, and our local leadership—including the Chairman, Sheriff, and School Superintendent—to find a resolution to Pearson’s water and sewer challenges. Protecting the health and safety of our citizens is my top priority, and I will keep the community informed as progress continues."
This comes after water was cut off on Tuesday, August 19, across the Atkinson County School District. Schools remained open through Thursday, August 21, despite students and staff not having access to safe drinking water. The school responded by bringing bottled water, putting hand sanitizer in the restrooms, and turning off the water fountains.
Because of the negative results, the boil water advisory has been lifted. However, classes remain canceled for Atkinson County Schools on Friday, August 22.
