This comes after South Carolina officials with the State Ethics Commission filed 76 counts of ethics violations against Hill in the wake of Murdaugh's 2023 double homicide trial.

She has been accused of allowing a photo of Murdaugh in a holding cell to be taken to promote her book on the trial, giving herself bonuses, and using county money to buy dozens of lunches for her staff, prosecutors and a vendor.

Hill also reportedly struck a deal with a documentary maker to use the county courtroom in exchange for promoting her book on the trial, which later she admitted had plagiarized passages, according to a South Carolina Ethics Commission complaint.

Hill's co-author of the book, Neil Gordon said Wednesday seeing Hill arrested was sad.

“Seeing Becky’s mugshot was really sad; it’s a far different expression than the happy-go-lucky grandmother I once knew. I think it added insult to injury that the photo was taken at the Colleton County Courthouse she ran during the Murdaugh trial," Gordon said.

In December of 2024, Murdaugh filed a motion to appeal his convictions and sentences based on allegations of jury tampering.

In a statement Wednesday, Murdaugh's lawyers, Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, said they weren't surprised to learn of Hill's arrest saying:

We are aware of the charges filed against Becky Hill and while these developments are serious, they are not surprising. We have long raised our concerns about her conduct during and after the trial and this arrest further underscores the need to protect the integrity of the judicial process. Every defendant is entitled to a fair and impartial trial and we look forward to Alex Murdaugh finally getting that fair treatment."

In a lengthy 132-page filing, Murdaugh's lawyers argued that former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill influenced one or more jurors to find Murdaugh guilty. They argued that Hill was seeking a guilty conviction to drive sales of a book she planned to write about the trial. Additionally, the filing alleged that during Murdaugh's murder trial, the court erred in allowing the jury to hear arguments regarding the former lawyer's financial crimes. The two-pronged argument lays the basis for Murdaugh's lawyers to allege he didn't receive a fair trial.

Then, in mid-April, the South Carolina Supreme Court granted the 120-day extension of time to South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson's Office to respond to Murdaugh's appeal.

Back in January 2024, Judge Jean Toal denied Murdaugh’s bid for a new trial after his defense team accused a clerk of court of tampering with a jury.

However, Toal said she wasn’t sure if Hill was telling the truth that she never spoke to jurors about the case, saying she was “attracted by the siren call of celebrity.”

During that hearing, Hill also testified, denying she ever spoke about the case or Murdaugh at all with jurors.

Hill resigned as Colleton County clerk of court in March 2024.
