ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Jesus is the Answer Ministry hosted a free giveaway of food, furniture, books and other household items to help families start the new year.

Rushie Berry, one of the main organizers for the event, said the idea was inspired by community need.

“Because there was a need for it. Peoples was really in need because walking around and seeing people in the community with not shoes and not a decent pair of shoes on their feet, clothes all tattered and stuff... So that was a vision,” Berry said.

With enhanced Affordable Care Act health insurance subsidies expiring in 2025, families already in need may struggle more entering 2026. Jennifer Reese, who attended the giveaway, said these events matter because they show how the community looks out for each other.

“I think events are important for the community because people that are less fortunate, people that may be lacking— maybe just be in need. It’s very important that these events occur so they can get what they need,” Reese said.

Berry said witnessing the impact she has on others reminds her that she’s living out her purpose.

“Makes me feel really like we’re doing something to help someone, and that’s what we’re here for. We’re here for to be a blessing to the community,” Berry said.

The event allows Jesus is the Answer Ministry to provide solutions to help families have a smoother transition into the new year.
