AMERICUS, Ga. (WALB) - In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, several community organizations came together to fight food insecurity by distributing more than 800 produce bags and fresh collards earlier today in Americus.

Healthy Sumter, in partnership with Phoebe Sumter, Flint River Fresh, The Food Mill of Columbus, the Americus Rotary, and Sisters in Service of Southwest Georgia, hosted the distribution at the Sumter County Fairgrounds.
More than 60 volunteers were on hand to assist residents, including newly elected Americus Mayor Travis Rush. Volunteers from across Southwest Georgia worked together to ensure families had access to fresh, healthy food on a day dedicated to service and community impact.

Organizers say the event reflects the spirit of Dr. King’s legacy by encouraging unity, service, and care for neighbors throughout the region.
