COOK COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Cook County officials have implemented a temporary restriction, effective Feb 16., on outdoor burning in response to severe drought conditions threatening the safety of county residents.
The new ordinance aims to reduce the risk of wildfires and protect public health and property during this period of extreme dryness.

Cook County has experienced prolonged dry weather that has significantly increased the risk of wildfires and the rapid spread of uncontrolled fires, officials said.
Open burning of yard debris poses a serious threat to public safety, property and natural resources during periods of extreme drought. To protect the health, safety and welfare of its citizens, the Board of Commissioners has enacted temporary burning restrictions.
Officials said, effective immediately, all open burning of yard debris is prohibited in the unincorporated areas of Cook County. This includes:
- Leaves
- Limbs
- Grass
- Other vegetative matter
No person is permitted to ignite or allow the burning of yard debris outdoors except as specifically outlined in the exemptions below.
The following activities are exempt from this restriction:
- Controlled burns conducted by government agencies or authorized personnel for forestry or public safety purposes.
- Cooking fires in approved grills or fire pits, provided they are attended and comply with applicable safety regulations.
- Agricultural or forestry burns conducted under a valid permit and in accordance with state law and Georgia Forestry Commission guidelines.
Officials said violations of this ordinance are taken seriously. Anyone who violates this restriction or fails to comply with its requirements may face:
- A fine of up to $1,000
- Imprisonment for up to six months
- Or both
Violations will be prosecuted through the Magistrate Court of Cook County.
This temporary restriction remains in effect until drought conditions improve and the Board of Commissioners formally rescinds the ordinance. Residents will be notified when conditions have stabilized and burning restrictions are lifted.
For questions or to report violations, contact Cook County Code Enforcement or visit the Cook County website.
