WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Justice Department appears to be moving forward with an expected indictment of President Donald Trump's former national security advisor, John Bolton.
The department is expected to present the possible criminal case and seek an indictment by a federal grand jury in Maryland on Thursday, multiple sources reported to CNN.
Bolton has been accused of sending "highly sensitive" classified documents to his family from a private server while working at the White House.
The allegations led to a raid by the Federal Bureau of Investigation at Bolton's house and office in August. At the time, Bolton was not detained and had not been charged with any crimes. Agents seized multiple documents during the raid, which read "secret," "confidential," and "classified," according to court documents.
Bolton, who also served as U.N. ambassador for George W. Bush, has denied any wrongdoing and possessing classified documents.
President Trump has previously said he is "not a fan of John Bolton."
He's a real sort of lowlife. When I hired him, he served a good purpose, because, as you know, he was one of the people that forced Bush to do the ridiculous bombings in the Middle East," Trump said in August. "He wants to always kill people, and he's very bad at what he does, but he worked out great for me."
If Bolton is charged, his case would mark the third person to be indicted under Trump's Department of Justice.
New York Attorney General Letitia James was indicted last week. She was charged with bank fraud, as well as making false statements to a financial institution. James said she views the indictment as "political retribution" on behalf of Trump.
Former FBI Director James Comey was indicted on two counts of making false statements and obstruction of justice on September 25. Comey responded to the indictment, claiming that he's "innocent." He added his actions were the "costs" of standing up to Trump.
