(Gray News) - Dolly Parton previously revealed that she pre-recorded a song that would be available for release following her death.

Tucked into a wooden vault at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort is an unreleased Dolly Parton song called “My Place in History,” written to be her last.

The country legend says she placed the song in a box along with a CD player and cassette player, but the box won’t be opened until 2045, when the resort celebrates its 30th anniversary, People reported back in 2022.

“I don’t know whose damn idea that was,” Parton said. “They weren’t expecting me to be there at all, and I probably won’t be. I might be there, who knows. I figure it’ll probably disintegrate and nobody will ever hear it, that’s what bothers me. If it rots in there before they open it.”

Parton died on Aug. 25 at 80.

Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, revealed the news in a Facebook video.

“It is an honor, an honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness. But sadness lies with us, not with Dolly,” Seaver said.

In the country music icon’s final interview Aug. 21, she told People about “dealing with some health issues,” which forced her to cancel an appearance at her Dollywood theme park the previous week.

The 80-year-old singer added that her most recent health struggles stemmed from “not paying attention” to herself while watching over her late husband, Carl Thomas Dean, who died in March 2025 at age 82.

Parton’s music career spanned seven decades, and she released her first No. 1 country album in 1977.

She holds the Guinness World Record as the woman with the longest span of No. 1 hits on the U.S. Top Country Albums chart.
