ATLANTA, Ga. — Former Vice President Kamala Harris addressed Fulton County Democrats on Friday night, just days before voters head to the polls on Election Day.
Speaking for approximately 25 minutes, Harris criticized the Trump administration’s positions on tariffs, cuts to Medicaid, and the war in Iran.
“You have proven that when Democrats invest in the South, we can win in the South,” Harris said. “You register voters, you build coalitions, you knock on doors and you win races that the pundits were saying were impossible.”
Harris also highlighted several Georgia candidates, including Democratic nominee for governor Keisha Lance Bottoms and Sen. Raphael Warnock, both of whom addressed the crowd earlier in the evening.
“You are giving so many people a reason for hope,” Harris said. “You are taking the pain that this President and his party have inflicted and you have turned it into purpose.”
The day before
Harris was in Atlanta hosting the “We the People” town hall at Elizabeth Baptist Church for the NAACP.
“The pain is real and we can look at the most recent behaviors and actions or inactions coming out of our nation’s capital,” said Harris. “What I do believe we need to do going forward, is not only vote and have our voices heard there is some structural work that needs to be done, including we need to expand the Supreme Court.”
Other speakers at Thursday’s event included NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson, Georgia State Conference NAACP President Gwenette Westbrook and Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens.
“We must we must get people to the polls,” said Westbrook.
“We are indeed living through challenging times and then to add insult to injury, now we have to sit up here and deal with democracy being at stake,” said Dickens.
Voters walked away with last-minute voting tips such as having a plan to vote, educating yourselves on who and what issues are on the ballot, and making a plan for where and when you will vote. Community leaders and elected officials joined in to hype up voters on the importance of the role they play in democracy.
“We hold unique power to shape Georgia future, our voices matter, so let us make sure we use our voices to organize, lead, serve and most of all vote,” said Jeremiah Florence, Georgia NAACP Youth and College President.
“When you cast your ballot remember you’re not just voting for that name on the line, you’re voting for yourselves, you’re voting for the issues you care about, you’re voting for the people that are going to shape that policies that impact your everyday lives. Your life, your family, your future is all on the ballot,” said Rep. Nikema Williams.
The NAACP made sure voters left knowing their vote and their voices matters, with final pushes to stay energized between elections.
“We need to ensure that structural we have something that compel people to participate,” said Johnson.
“I do believe Georgia has created a road map for what is the true voice, maybe for some who haven’t been paid attention, a new voice of the south,” said Harris. “I do believe that if we continue with this level of activism and energy a year from now finally certain people will understand the South must be invested in.”
Early voting ends Friday, Oct. 30. Election Day is Nov. 3.
