ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - A 22-year-old Albany man is taking a unique approach to help raise money for new athletic shoes for local students.

The HEART organization, which stands for Hands Extended Across Reaching Together, is a nonprofit organization that began in Albany in 1980.

The organization works to provide services to individuals and families across southwest Georgia who are socially and economically challenged.

Right now, HEART is raising money through its Dollars of Hope campaign to support its Shoes from the HEART project.

The goal is to raise $25,000 by the end of October. That money will help provide 500 new pairs of athletic shoes to students at five schools within the Dougherty County School System.

One person helping make that goal possible is Joshua Harrison.

Harrison has found a unique way to contribute to the campaign, collecting aluminum cans and turning them into donations.

While collecting cans may seem like a small effort, Harrison hopes his work will help put new shoes on the feet of students who need them.

The HEART organization is continuing to encourage the community to support the Shoes from the HEART project as it works toward its $25,000 fundraising goal.
