ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Funeral arrangements have been released for Chris Fisher, the Warm Springs police officer killed in the line of duty on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Sept. 8, a visitation will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at Flat Creek Baptist Church in Fayetteville. The funeral will follow directly after.

At around midnight on Wednesday, Fisher was in his patrol car near Meriwether Country Inn when a pickup truck stopped beside him. Its driver fired multiple shots into Fisher’s car, according to officials.

The driver, 23-year-old Jimmy Steverson, would be captured in South Carolina hours later. Deputies found him with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and he was taken to the hospital, where he died.

Court records show Fisher arrested Steverson on Aug. 28 on felony charges, including obstruction, possession of a firearm during an attempted crime and possession of marijuana. Steverson was released on bond.

Fisher is being remembered by his community as a man who loved his work and community. Salam Baptist Church Senior Pastor Richard C. Statham said he “took his role as a public servant very seriously.”

“He gave it his all,” Statham continued. “... He went with a whole heart and died serving what he committed his life to do.”

Fisher’s family is requesting the United States Honor Flag, which flew at Ground Zero during 9/11 recovery efforts and has since been part of ceremonies honoring more than 1,000 police officers, firefighters, first responders and other public servants.

The Honor Network said it is trying to get the flag to Georgia over the weekend.

“When a family calls, the mission begins,” Christopher K. Heisler, founder of the United States Honor Flag, said in a statement. “Our responsibility now is simple: get the flag to Georgia and make certain Sgt. Fisher, his family and his fellow officers know that a grateful nation stands with them.”

An online fundraiser was started for Fisher’s wife and two children.
