GEORGIA (WALB) - The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GDNR) asked hunters to practice safe hunting when using tree stands. During Georgia’s 2024-2025 hunting season, they said 12 of 23 hunting accidents were related to tree stands. One of those incidents resulted in a fatality.
The GDNR said there are several safety concerns and tips to keep in mind when using a tree stand.
- Fasten the stand to the tree according to the manufacturer
- Wear fall arrest systems during ascent and descent
- Have a plan in place for recue
- Keep any signal device within reach if suspended by safety device
- Prolonged suspension in safety harnesses could be fatal
- Use a haul line to pull gear to the stand and to lower it to the ground
- Avoid taking medications before hunting to prevent drowsiness or poor motor function
- Always tell someone where the stand is and when the hunt is expected to end
