Description
HAHIRA, Ga. (WALB) — A Hahira police officer has been terminated after an internal review uncovered multiple alleged policy violations, some of which police say may be criminal in nature.
Hahira Police Chief Stryde Jones confirmed Thursday, Aug. 27, that the department launched an internal review after allegations surfaced that an officer had violated department policies.
During that review, the department reportedly discovered more information indicating some of the alleged violations could be criminal, according to Jones.
Following the discovery, the officer was fired from the Hahira Police Department, Jones said. Police then forwarded the information to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and requested that the agency open a criminal investigation.
Jones said the GBI investigation is currently active.
The department has not publicly identified the former officer or released details about the specific policy violations or alleged criminal conduct. Officials said releasing further details at this time could jeopardize the ongoing investigation.
“As we continue to work to assure our own accountability, we discovered an officer had violated our departmental policies,” Jones said. “We will continue to monitor the adherence to our policies and procedures. We will continuously work to ensure we are transparent with the public in the way we conduct ourselves and hold those responsible who violate the public’s trust.”
No criminal charges have been announced at this time.
WALB is working to learn more about the circumstances surrounding the officer’s termination and the GBI investigation.
