Description

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A burned body was found on top of Stone Mountain on Saturday morning, prompting an investigation from several law enforcement agencies.

A hiker called 911 at around 8:20 a.m. to report the body, Stone Mountain Park Department of Public Safety spokesperson John Bankhead said. The dead man has not yet been identified.

Stone Mountain Park remains open as the city’s police department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation look into what happened. The gondola lift that takes visitors to the top of the mountain has been shut down, but Bankhead said it’s due to the wind.

According to Bankhead, the body was found buried under rocks in an area that visitors don’t usually frequent. The caller didn’t identify themselves.

“It’s very safe. It’s a family-oriented park,” Bankhead said. “These types of things are very rare here. This is the first time in my knowledge that something like this has happened.”
