SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Hundreds of protestors gathered in downtown Salt Lake at Washington Square Park on Thursday to stand in solidarity with anti-ICE protestors in Los Angeles.

The protest was a taste of what might come on Saturday, or "No Kings Day."

The protest was "mostly peaceful," according to the Salt Lake City Police Department.

A fight broke out early on. Officers ushered away a man who was part of the brawl.

The protest began at about 5:30 p.m., with a march starting just after 7 p.m.

Demonstrators marched to the Federal Building before turning back toward the City and County Building.

Officers said the majority of those in attendance voiced their concerns peacefully, but several agitators disrupted the crowd, leading to at least half a dozen minor skirmishes.

"There were a few agitators in the group that tried to rile the group up,” said Brent Weisberg, a spokesperson for SLCPD. “This group has appeared to remain mostly peaceful, which is something we have been asking of the entire time. Our role has been to facilitate a peaceful and lawful demonstration so people can voice their opinions."

While no major injuries were reported, some property damage occurred during the march — including damage to a Tesla vehicle, which officers said remains under investigation. Detectives are investigating the incident.

Officers said the protest was unplanned, but they had contingency measures in place.

In anticipation of possible unrest, SLCPD utilized drones, license plate readers, and additional staffing to help ensure safety and monitor the crowd.

As of late Thursday evening, officers remained stationed near the City and County Building, where a small group of demonstrators continued to gather.

Officers said they will remain at the site as long as necessary and are already preparing for more planned events expected over the weekend.
