COFFEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) — According to Robert Preston Jr. with Douglas Now, who was in the courtroom for Tuesday’s hearing on November 3, Superior Court Judge Andy Spivey heard several motions in the Jon Worrell murder case.
Worrell is accused of orchestrating the September 20, 2006, murder of his wife, Doris Worrell, at Jon’s Sports Park in Douglas.
The GBI arrested Worrell in May 2025, charging him with malice murder, felony murder, and conspiracy to commit murder. He has remained in the Coffee County Jail since his arrest.
Worrell’s defense attorneys are requesting a change of venue, arguing that extensive media coverage and community commentary would make it difficult to seat a fair and impartial jury in Coffee County.
Prosecutors asked Judge Spivey to deny the motion. However, the judge did not issue a ruling during Tuesday’s hearing and said he would make a decision at a later date.
Jury selection is scheduled to begin March 1, 2027. Judge Spivey said he intends to move forward with the trial on that date, whether it takes place in Coffee County or elsewhere in Georgia.
