ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Jury selection is set to begin Monday in the retrial of a former state trooper, since elected mayor of a small west Georgia city, on charges of vehicular homicide.
A.J. Scott, mayor of Buchanan, Georgia, is facing two counts of vehicular homicide in the second degree and reckless driving. Those charges and others stem from a September 2015 crash from his time as a trooper that claimed the lives of two teenagers and injured two others.
Prosecutors said Scott was traveling more than 90 mph in a 45 mph Carroll County speed zone without lights or sirens. He allegedly broadsided a vehicle carrying four passengers. Two of them - Kylie Lindsey and Isabella Chinchilla - died in the crash.
Scott was subsequently fired from the Georgia State Patrol.
A mistrial was declared in Scott’s first trial in 2019 due to the district attorney’s office allegedly withholding evidence. His new trial comes after being postponed back in April.
The trial is being held in Carroll County Superior Court.
