SAN ANTONIO (KABB/WOAI) — In the aftermath of the Hill Country Flooding, where the death count continues to climb, survivors are working to pick up the pieces of their lives.

In the Texas Hill Country, which some meteorologists call the Flooding Capital of the World, floods are a part of life.

So, in the early hours of the Fourth of July morning, Austin Donahue thought it was just business as usual.

"Heard the water, which is not uncommon for being on the river, so I went and ate some pie and had a cup of coffee,” the Kerrville resident said.

But it did not take long for pie to turn into panic.

"I knew it was bad when at the level it was at, I saw a house roof come by and a car,” Donahue said.

"Never have I ever seen it this bad," said Travis Hodges, a lifelong resident of Kerrville and son-in-law to Donahue. "Nothing transpired, nothing ever occurred where it was a wall of water to the magnitude that it was."

In the panic of trying to leave the house, Hodges's mother slipped and fell and broke her shoulder. She had surgery Monday morning.

"I didn't think it would ever happen to us... But of course, you never know. Yeah, it's just devastation."

The aftermath is just that: devastation.

The antiques, the family heirlooms, the house that this family made a home over the past 100 years -- destroyed in a matter of moments.

"Just having to go into your house and see and walk on things you love and hear them break and not being able to see anything and just total loss is what the problem is and -- it's a shock at the time,” Donahue said.

But in the face of tragedy, the community always shows up to fight.

Volunteers from the family’s church brought food, water, and helped clean up the devastation that the floods left behind.

"It means the world to me,” Donahue said. “It touches my heart. When people come together it's just, it's amazing. I feel the lord coming through everybody and everything that’s happening."

It’s that type of kindness that gives this entire community hope that despite the devastation — they will get through this.

Community Bible Church is willing to help any Kerrville residents to the best of their ability, Donahue added.
