TERRELL COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) — A Lee County High School student died in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 32 and Callis Road in Terrell County on Wednesday, June 3.

WALB confirmed with the family that the person who died was 18-year-old Robert Knight.

Knight attended Lee County High School and was preparing to enter his senior year.

Family members said he was driving to help his girlfriend and her family move when the crash happened.

“You know, I keep asking myself, why take a love, kind-hearted person out of this world? Like, he meant nothing but joy, love, laughter, all of that. And I just don’t know why he had to go so soon,” said Adriana Hernandez, Knight’s sister.

Knight was recently formally adopted by his best friend’s family. Cayden Nelms said the loss is unimaginable.

“He was the funniest person I ever met. There’s not one time I would be with him, and I wasn’t laughing. His energy was unmatched, and he would always brighten up whoever was around him. I tried my best to give him the life he always wanted, and I love seeing him happy. Even when he wasn’t feeling the best, you can never tell, because he was always there for you,” Nelms said.

Jessica Reed, Knight’s aunt, said Knight’s legacy is his joy.

“Rob didn’t have the easiest and best life. He had every reason to be mad, angry at the world. But none of it, nothing touched him in his joy, in his kindness,” Reed said.

The family is asking for prayers for families on both sides. They set up a GoFundMe that has raised over $3,000 in less than 24 hours.

A viewing is scheduled for Saturday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Amazing Grace Church. The family is asking attendees to wear bright colors.

Crash details

The crash happened around 8 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 32 and Callis Road, officials said.

The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) confirmed a vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with a cattle trailer. Both vehicles spun out of control, and Knight was ejected from the vehicle he was driving, GSP said.

Officials said that six cows also died as a result of the crash.
