Description

WASHINGTON (TNND) — As a result of an 8.8 magnitude earthquake hitting Russia's coast, a slew of small tsunamis spread across the Pacific Coast, impacting Russia, Japan and the United States as warnings and advisories remain in effect for some areas.

The earthquake ranks among the four strongest earthquakes this century, and among the eight strongest since 1900, according to the USGS.

We've got a look at where the tsunami waves have hit and the impacts so far. For the latest, CLICK HERE.

Russia

Damage and evacuations were reported in the Russian regions nearest the earthquake’s epicenter on the Kamchatka Peninsula.

However, authorities didn’t report any significant damage on the sparsely populated Kamchatka. The main city, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, is located on the coast of Avacha Bay, protecting it from waves.

Russia’s Oceanology Institute said that tsunami waves might have been as high as 33-49 feet in some sections of the Kamchatka coast. It said the waves that hit Severo-Kurilsk on the Kurils topped 19 feet.

Severokurilsk Mayor Alexander Ovsyannikov said the city was flooded by four tsunami waves, which washed fishing boats into the sea. Local Governor of Russia’s Kuril Islands, Valery Limarenko, said residents were safe and staying on high ground until the threat of a repeat wave was gone.

Russian authorities on the Kamchatka Peninsula and Kuril Islands canceled their tsunami warnings but say the risk of aftershocks and waves remains. The regional branch of Russia’s Emergency Ministry on Kamchatka warned that scientists expect aftershocks at magnitudes of up to 7.5.

Japan

The Japan Meteorological Agency said a tsunami as high as 2 feet had been detected at Hamanaka town on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido and Kuji port in Iwate on the main island. A tsunami of 7.9 inches was detected in Tokyo Bay, according to the JMA.

The agency downgraded its tsunami alert to an advisory in the Pacific coast south of Fukushima, with the alert still in place farther north.

Shiji Kiyomoto, a JMA earthquake and tsunami response official, said high waves may last for at least a day, urging residents to stay at safe places.

Alaska

Up to 1.4 feet above tide levels were observed in Alaska's Aleutian Islands.

Dave Snider, tsunami warning coordinator with the National Tsunami Warning Center in Alaska, said Tuesday evening he had not heard of any specific reports of damage from the tsunami.

Hawaii

The tsunami took around 6 hours to travel towards Hawaii, with the Hawaiian Islands measuring a 4-foot tsunami wave hitting Haleiwa, the northern shore of Oahu.

Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows a tsunami wave over 5 feet has been reported on the north-central shore of Maui.

Just after 10:38 p.m. HST Wednesday, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center downgraded the Tsunami Warning for Hawaii to a Tsunami Advisory, meaning there is the potential for strong currents and dangerous waves, as well as flooding on beaches or in harbors.

Governor Josh Green said officials observed water receding by 20 to 30 feet at Haleiwa Harbor on Oahu, an indication that tsunami waves would arrive. Green said data from Midway Atoll, which is part of the way between Japan and Hawaii, measured tsunami waves from peak to trough of 6 feet (1.8 meters).

California

Tsunami activity continued to build in northern California as high tide approached Wednesday morning.

Maximum confirmed heights along the coast of 3.6 feet in Crescent City, 3.0 feet in Arena Cove and 1.2 feet in Humboldt Bay were recorded, according to the National Weather Service office in Eureka.

The measurements in Crescent City and Arena Cove were large enough to create minor coastal flooding and inundation, the weather service said on social media.

Crescent City officials warned on social media that higher surges could arrive around high tide and could affect lower-lying areas. They asked people to stay away from beaches and waterways.

The NWS in the Bay Area said there were tidal swings of 2 to 2.5 feet in as little as 15 minutes in San Francisco with intial wave arrival reported at 1:12 a.m. PST.

“This can create some seriously dangerous currents along beaches and harbors,” the weather service said. “It’s just a good idea to stay away from the water today!”

Pt. Reyes reported the highest tidal deviation yet (1.99 ft at 4:00 a.m. PST). The deviation came more than 3 hours after the initial tsunami wave arrived.

Around Monterey Bay, the service reported continuing rapid fluctuations of 1-2 feet in water level, with the initial tsunami wave arriving around 12:48 a.m. PST.

In Los Angeles, the NWS reported, "The Port San Luis gauge shows a rapid and damaging surge, going from low to high tide in just a few minutes. Do not return to inundated areas as waters will recede, but could return multiple times through the next 24 hours, and the first wave may not be the largest."

Oregon

The Oregon Department of Emergency Management said on Facebook that small tsunami waves were expected along the coast starting around 11:40 p.m. local time, with wave heights between 1 to 2 feet.

Washington

A tsunami watch reached the Washington coast on Tuesday, but has since been downgraded to an advisory.

New Zealand

New Zealand authorities issued warnings of “strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges” along all coastlines of the South Pacific island nation.

Waves were not expected to arrive until late Wednesday night local time, officials said.
