LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) — Some residents in North Lowndes County are experiencing color and odor issues with their water following a recent maintenance upgrade to one of the area’s wells. Officials say the well was taken offline Wednesday for additional testing.

The issue arose after drillers struck a sulfur vein while deepening the well to boost water output. Although the water may have an unusual color or smell, county officials emphasize that there is no safety risk associated with the water quality.

“We understand the current water quality is not acceptable for some customers, and we will continue working until this issue is resolved,” stated county officials.

Utility crews are actively flushing lines to remove sulfur from the system. If testing fails to produce a viable solution, the affected well will remain out of service.

Lowndes County has apologized for the inconvenience and assures residents that restoring water quality remains a top priority.
