Description

QUITMAN COUNTY, Ga. (WTVM) - A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Quitman County, approximately 50 miles south of Columbus.

Deputy Coroner Tina White confirmed that the man, 41 year-old Maurice Snapp, was shot by Quitman County Sheriff Charles Davis early Monday morning.

Responding to a call that came in around 8:30 a.m. in reference to a woman having been attacked by a man, Sheriff Davis encountered the man, later identified as Snapp. Snapp attacked Sheriff Davis, and the sheriff shot Snapp.

According to officials, first responders arrived at the scene off State Route 39, near Lucy Lane, around 8:53 a.m., where the victim was pronounced dead.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has launched an investigation, which is standard protocol for any law enforcement-involved shooting. Sheriff Davis declined to comment due to the ongoing inquiry.

By Monday afternoon, the scene showed minimal visible activity aside from a sheriff’s truck parked nearby.

According to GBI records, this marks the 46th officer-involved shooting in Georgia in 2025, with 19 resulting in fatalities.
