CAIRO, Ga. (WCTV) - A man is still at large after a shooting on 6th Avenue NW in Cairo prompted a temporary lockdown at Washington Middle School Friday afternoon, according to local law enforcement.
The shooting transpired on 6th Avenue NW as officers found one person at the scene who “had been shot by a suspect known to the victim,” per Cairo PD. The sheriff’s office notified the public of the school’s lockdown at about 2:15 p.m. Friday.

Police said the suspect is 31-year-old Montravious Hamilton, who is still at large and considered armed and dangerous. He is reportedly charged with two counts of aggravated assault and his last known address is 700 6th Avenue NW.
People who see Hamilton are asked not to engage and are advised to immediately call 911.
Those with information can contact CPD at 229-378-3096 or dial 911.
Due to the incident’s proximity to the school, the middle school was placed on lockdown as a “precautionary measure,” deputies said.
The Grady County School District provided an update just before 3 p.m., confirming that the lockdown had been lifted. However, families were advised to expect an increased law enforcement presence during regular dismissal.
The district also urged parents not to come to the school to check out their students, saying students who walk are expected to take the bus instead.
The sheriff’s office also asked residents to be on the lookout for a white Dodge Charger that “may be associated with this incident.”
Cairo City Manager Booker Gainor told WCTV a suspect fled the scene before police arrived at 6th Avenue NW.
One person was injured in the incident, according to the city manager.
As of Friday afternoon, authorities had not released additional details about how the shooting unfolded.
But Gainor said the scene is clear.
The sheriff’s office encouraged anyone who sees the vehicle or may have any information to call GCSO, Cairo Police or 911.
“Citizens are urged to use caution when traveling in the area and to remain alert,” deputies said. “Do not approach or attempt to confront anyone.”
