ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Parents and students at Maynard Jackson High School claim they were the targets of racial slurs and spitting during a game against Jefferson High School on Friday.

An Instagram video posted by a Maynard Jackson High School student claimed the school’s marching band, players and parents were the subjects of racial slurs and that Jefferson fans held out Confederate flags and other “paraphernalia that supported racism.” Members of the marching band were reportedly spit on, pushed and called racial slurs.

The video posted by the student claimed that Jefferson City School’s athletic director ignored reports of the incidents.

A parent also reported that Jefferson players spit on Jackson players and called the players racial slurs. The woman posted a video to Instagram allegedly showing the moment her son was spit on by a Jefferson player.

Atlanta Public Schools and Maynard Jackson High School released a statement, saying they were “deeply concerned by reports that members of our marching band were subjected to racist language while departing Jefferson High School and loading buses following Friday night’s game.”

“Racism, harassment, and any behavior that threatens the safety or dignity of students are unacceptable,” the district went on to say. “While no students were physically harmed, APS takes these allegations seriously and is committed to ensuring a thorough review of the matter. We are working closely with the administration at Jefferson High School to investigate all allegations related to Friday’s football game so that appropriate action can be taken based on the findings. APS is continuing to gather information and provide support to the students, families, and staff affected.”

Atlanta Public Schools said counseling was available for Maynard Jackson students.

Jefferson City Schools said in a statement, “Jefferson City Schools is aware of concerns regarding Friday night’s athletic event. Jefferson High School administrators are working closely with Maynard Jackson High School officials. We are carefully investigating and gathering information to determine the specifics and appropriate next steps. We take these matters seriously.”
