CAMILLA, Ga. (WALB) - Mitchell County EMC officials are warning residents about a scam targeting customers in their area.

Scammers are sending text messages to residents claiming to be from Mitchell EMC regarding unpaid bills or immediate service disconnection, according to officials.

Officials said Mitchell EMC will never ask for payment through text links.

Residents who receive a text message from scammers should not click on links or provide personal or payment information, officials said.

Customers are asked to verify their account directly through the official website or customer service line.
