DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) - A groundbreaking ceremony and dedication will be held for a new housing development for Hurricane Helene survivors.

In a Facebook post, the city said The Hope Initiative, Hope for Coffee, and the city of Douglas will host the ceremony and dedication.

Coffee County and Douglas residents are invited to attend the event on Tuesday, July 22, at 10 a.m. in the park located at 315 Alunza St, according to the post.

“By joining together, we have fostered healing and hope in the Douglas and Coffee County area following the challenges brought by Hurricane Helene,” said Mayor Tony Paulk. “Let’s celebrate resilience and progress as we pave the way for a brighter future together!”

The city said the event will launch a new housing development aimed at assisting residents who suffered total home loss or were displaced due to the devastating effects of the hurricane. Additionally, the event will pay tribute to Mr. Lee Sims, who lost his life while assisting with the efforts of the hurricane.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with our friends in Douglas and Coffee County,” said Pastor Stephen Boyken, President of The Hope Initiative of Mayfield, Kentucky. “Our hearts have been touched by the determination of kind-hearted folks committed to living out their faith and helping their neighbors. We have seen over and over again the positive change that can happen when local government, businesses, and the faith community come together to BUILD HOPE. This groundbreaking highlights progress on the long road to recovery and is an opportunity to celebrate the hard work of so many.”
