DOUGHERTY, Ga. (WALB) - Albany and Dougherty County are launching a new initiative aimed at improving safety for residents living in apartment complexes and other multifamily housing.

Beginning Aug. 1, the Albany Fire Department will begin conducting inspections of multifamily residential properties throughout Albany and Dougherty County. The inspections are designed to identify fire and life safety hazards, improve compliance with fire codes, and reduce the risk of fires and other emergencies.

City officials say the program will focus on working collaboratively with apartment owners, property managers and maintenance staff throughout the inspection process. Fire inspectors will provide education, guidance and reasonable timelines for addressing any deficiencies identified during inspections.

According to the Albany Fire Department, the initiative is built around the philosophy of “Shared Responsibility, Shared Accountability, and Shared Success,” emphasizing partnerships with property owners to improve community safety.

Officials say the Multifamily Inspection Program is part of the city’s ongoing commitment to protecting residents and ensuring safe living conditions. The effort is expected to strengthen emergency preparedness, reduce property damage caused by fires, and improve overall community resilience.
