BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (WALB) - A Department of Public Safety officer is recovering after being bitten by a dog while chasing a suspect.

Bainbridge Public Safety officials have confirmed that a dog was shot and killed in the incident in Bainbridge on May 29.

The incident happened on Boulevard Drive in Bainbridge behind the old Bainbridge mall.

Officials said A man was running from officers with two dogs after stealing a Bainbridge City Work Vehicle, according to Bainbridge Public Safety Director Frank Green.

“The worker was by his vehicle as they were cutting grass and he let the key in the vehicle. It’s always better to take your key out of the vehicle even if you’re in close proximity to it because things will happen unexpectedly or rapidly.”

Director Green said one of the dogs bit one of the officers, which led to the officer to shooting the dog.

Officials have identified the suspect as Alejandro Delgado. Delgado faces charges of theft by taking motor vehicle, interference with government property, and robbery.

Director Green said the officers and suspect remain unharmed. No officers were shot, and the suspect never fired at officers, according to Green.

The incident remains under investigation, officials say they are obtaining search warrants for Delgado’s home.
