Over 200,000 Georgians drop health coverage as ACA premiums skyrocket

GEORGIA (WALB) - More than 200,000 Georgia residents have dropped their Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace coverage, resulting in a 14% decline in enrollment. The losses come after Congress passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which eliminated enhanced ACA health insurance tax credits for Plan Year 2026, causing premiums to double, triple, or quadruple for hundreds of thousands of Georgians.

Georgia faces $3.7 billion in health care cuts—some of the steepest in the nation.

“This is what happens when Washington Republicans fight for billionaires and not ordinary people,” said U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA). “Last fall, over one million Georgians logged onto Georgia Access to find that their health care premiums had doubled. For some, it had tripled or quadrupled.”

Hundreds of thousands of additional Georgians have been pushed into new health plans with high deductibles, making their coverage essentially unusable.

“The numbers don’t lie: Washington Republicans took away health care for hundreds of thousands of Georgians to give a tax cut to the wealthy,” Warnock said. “Ordinary Georgians need relief, and I’m going to stay in this fight.”

Similar enrollment declines are occurring nationwide, with millions of Americans expected to lose ACA insurance due to higher premiums.
